Easy Steps for Renewing a U.S. Passport

Forbes reports that 21.4 million U.S. passports were issued in 2017, and that the number of passports continues to increase each year. Most of these passports will eventually need to be renewed at some point. Do you know how to renew your US passport? If not, then the following information is for you.

Routine Procedures

Renew your passport at least nine months before it expires. When planning overseas travel, remember that some countries require passports to remain valid for at least six months after your visit. Keep these timeframes in mind when determining when to begin renewing your passport.

Fill out the U.S. Passport Renewal Application (Form DS-82) online. Print the form and bring it with you to the Passport Services Office. Along with the application, you will need to submit a recent photograph. Many pharmacies, shipping centers, and department stores offer passport photos at very reasonable prices. Of course, you can also take your own photograph so long as it meets all of the U.S. passport requirements.

You’ll need to carefully document any name changes since you were last issued your passport. Accordingly, you should bring any marriage certificates, divorce decrees, etc. with you when renewing your passport.

Rather than renewing in person, you may also submit your application by mail. Submit your application, photograph, and name change documents if applicable to:

National Passport Processing Center

P.O. Box 90155

Philadelphia, PA 19190

Include a check or money order for $30 if requesting a passport card, or $110 for a passport book.

Expedited Requests

Are you wondering how to renew a US passport quickly? This could be necessary if you are traveling within the next three weeks. Even if you are not planning to travel, expedited service could still be needed if your passport is close to expiring.

For expedited service, contact the closest passport agency and follow the steps above. You can contact the State Department’s hotline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-877-487-2778. Alternatively, you can also submit an application via the Internet using the Online Passport Appointment System.

Speedy requests must be accompanied by the appropriate documentation. For example, if you are traveling due to a life-or-death situation, provide documentation as to the emergency. When travel is less than 3 weeks out, you’ll need to provide airline or cruise reservations instead.

Expedited requests are an additional $60, not to include delivery fees. You must pay the additional fees before your renewal application will be processed.

Knowing how to renew your US passport can help streamline the process. Plan early whenever possible to avoid unnecessary delays that might interfere with your travel plans.
