Self-storage facilities abound in most communities, but not all of them are equal when it comes to price versus value and essentials like safety and security. Here are some top things consumers should consider before renting a self-storage unit.

How Much and How Long are You Locked Into?

Is there a minimum timeframe you can rent the storage unit for, and if you commit to a longer contract can you get any discounts? These are pertinent questions to ask about with a manager at the facility, as they can often work deals with you and may offer perks like a free local moving truck or packing supplies.

Hours of Access

If you’re a midnight prowler who may want to get to a certain item in the middle of the night, a 24-hour access facility is the best solution for you.

If you just want access during routine hours, most companies will be able to meet your needs. Be forewarned, that facilities reserve the right to change hours of operation at any time, but they’ll give adequate notice.

Climate Control and Other Amenities

If you have valuables that don’t store well in extreme temperatures such as wood and electronics, a climate-controlled storage facility is generally necessary.

Another feature of importance may be insurance coverage options to protect your costly goods, and many facilities consider insurance mandatory.

Security and Safety Considerations

Is the self-storage facility fenced and gated? Are codes or pass-cards required, and if so, how often are these updated to prevent compromises? When updates occur, how do you gain access in a pinch? Are there security monitoring cameras throughout the premises?

These are essential questions to consider before renting a unit and signing a contract, as safety concerns shouldn’t be underestimated at storage facilities that miscreants might be targeting.
