When we first buy a new mobile phone, we take care of it as if It’s a newborn baby. We’re cautious about handling it and where we store it. We invest in protective cases and screen guards to prevent damage. And almost never allow our little siblings to play with it (come on, admit it.) 

But like any outgrown object, there comes a point when we stop caring for our phones as much. After the first time you drop your brand-new gadget, you’re less protective of it all of a sudden. We tend to get careless. But lucky for us, most mobile phones these days are built to withstand falls, scratches, and any other damage. You can get any issue fixed in a cell phone repair shop, and your device will be as good as new. 

But gadgets, no matter how advanced or high-tech, are prone to gradual wear and tear. There will come a day when you need a new one. Here are some signs you need to invest in a new phone (or if you’re just looking for an excuse to buy the latest iPhone). 

Your device functions too slowly

Chances are, you will encounter a lot of software updates during your use of your device. These updates are necessary to improve the phone’s response, fix bug errors, or change the software design. After several updates, you’re bound to notice your phone slowing down. That’s because mobile phones run on processors that have certain data and memory capacities. The more updates you install, the more memory is taken up on your processor. When the storage capacity reaches its limit, it takes longer for it to respond and perform. Since you can’t downgrade your software, it might be time to get a new device with a faster processor. 

Your applications crash frequently

Sometimes, the applications on our phone shut down all of a sudden, and we’re taken back to our home screen. This is what is referred to as a crash. More often than not, the problem is within the application itself, and the manufacturers will need to undertake bug fixes to improve the app’s performance. 

But if you find that it’s only your applications that are crashing and the same apps work well on other devices, then the problem might be in your RAM. The RAM is one part of your device’s memory in charge of running your software and applications. A low RAM threshold may not be able to power up high-memory apps and the volume of data that works in the background. 

There might also be some cases wherein you aren’t able to use an application because they require you to use a particular phone carrier network that might be different from yours. If you have a locked phone, you may not be able to use such an app because you are tied down to a specific carrier. If that is the case, maybe it’s a sign for you to buy an unlocked phone, if you don’t know what is an unlocked phone , it is a phone that is not exclusively tied to a single carrier, which means that you can use any mobile phone carrier that you want.

Your mobile manufacturer stops creating software updates

We mentioned earlier that software updates could slow down your phone’s response. But these are also essential, considering that these create security patches, bug fixes, and performance improvements. Ideally, software updates should be available once or twice a year, at the very least. Although manufacturers like Apple make it a point to release software updates every three months or so. 

If your phone hasn’t received a software update request, it’s a sign that your manufacturer has abandoned the model. That means they no longer plan on addressing software issues on your device. Instead, they may be focusing on newer models. If you haven’t updated your device in 5 years, it’s time to make an upgrade. The lack of software updates and improvements can cause a lack of up-to-date encryption and data security risks. 

A mobile phone can typically last several years of use. But considering the fast pace of technological innovation today, there are instances when it may be time to say goodbye to vintage phones and keep up with new developments.
