What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is a condition that makes hair fall off in small patches and can be unnoticeable. The condition develops when the immune system affects or attacks the hair follicles, resulting in hair loss.
In some cases, sudden hair loss may occur on the eyelashes, face, eyebrows, and other body parts. It develops and recurs after some years between instances. The condition can lead to total hair loss, called alopecia Universalis, which can prevent the hair from growing back.
Signs and Symptoms of Alopecia
Hair loss can occur in many different ways, depending on what is causing it. It can affect your scalp or your whole body. Signs and symptoms include:
Gradual thinning on top of the head. This type of hair loss affects people as they age. In men, hair often goes away at the hairline on the forehead. Women have a broadening of the part in the hair. A typical hair loss pattern in older women is frontal fibrosing alopecia.
Circular or patchy bald spots. Some people lose hair in circular or patchy bald spots on their beards, eyebrows, or the scalp. Your skin may become painful or itchy before the hair falls off.
Sudden loosening of hair. Emotional or physical shock can cause hair to loosen. Hair may come out when washing and combining hair or even after gentle tugging. This hair loss causes hair thinning but is temporary.
Patches of scaling that spread over the scalp. This may be accompanied by redness, broken hair, swelling, and at times oozing. This is a sign of ringworms.
Treatment
There is no cure for alopecia, but there are treatments that are suggested by your doctors to help hair grow back quickly. Medical treatments include:
Topical agents
You can rub medications on your scalp that help stimulate hair growth. Remedies are available, both by prescription and over the counter:
Minoxidil is available OTC applied twice a day to the eyebrows, scalp, and beard. It’s safe but can take a year to see results.
Topical immunotherapy is a method in which a chemical is applied to the skin to flash an allergic rash. The rash may induce hair growth within six months.
Injections
Steroid injections are a standard option for patchy alopecia to help in hair regrowth on bald spots. The treatment should be repeated every two months to regrow hair but doesn’t prevent new hair loss.
Oral Treatments
Cortisone tablets are used sometimes for extensive alopecia, but you should discuss this option with your doctor because it has some side effects.
